Details:                          Bill began his military life at Sydney’s Liverpool Army Camp and was one of 130,000 Australian war horses sent overseas.  He was cared for by bush poet and war correspondent Banjo Paterson.

Approaching the end of the First World War the Australian Light Horse were planning a major offensive against the Turkish Empire.  To lull the enemy into believing nothing unusual was afoot, a race meeting was organised on the eve of the assault.  The main race was called The Jericho Cup, run over 3 miles through the desert sands.  The winner was Bill the Bastard, probably Australia’s Greatest War Horse.  His exploits are detailed in the book “Bill the Bastard” by noted historian Professor Roland Perry.  The ebook is available from Concord Library.

The “Road to the Jericho Cup” tour is a compelling, historically rich, and culturally significant journey. It provides a distinct focus on the Australian Light Horse’s ultimate success in the Middle East, celebrating the bravery of the soldiers and their magnificent Walers, particularly ‘Bill the Bastard,’ while offering a comprehensive exploration of key Australian landmarks and cultural sites.
