Details: World War Two came to Sydney in 1942 when three
midget submarines entered the Harbour in an attempt to sink the heavy cruiser
USS Chicago. The midget submarines were launched from mother submarines
which were capable of launching both planes and midget submarines.
The midget submarines were launched late afternoon on Sunday 31 May 1942
following three earlier reconnaissance flights over Sydney to identify the ships in
the harbour.
The second submarine, M-22 commanded by Lieutenant Keiu Matsuo, was
spotted entering the harbour at 10:52pm by HMAS Yandra which tried to ram the
submarine. It then dropped a spread of six depth charges. M-22 subsequently
retreated out to the harbour entrance and returned some four hours later at
2:56am. After being sighted in Taylors Bay at 5:00am and HMAS Sea Mist sank
her with two depth charges.
